A style that continues to move with the times

The now-iconic architectural style of Homes in the Hamptons is reflective of the lifestyle enjoyed by its locals. In researching this topic it’s very obvious when it comes to the Hamptons, the locals crave still to this day a sense of being part of what a traditional summer is supposed to be – beaches, lounging around, leisure, food and wine, gatherings of family and friends. Yet no-one wants to live in a house that hasn’t kept up with the times and therefore the style is always subtly evolving with a few constants creating a look that feels timeless. This type of architectural story is of great benefit to anyone thinking about buying, building or renovating their own Hamptons look as many styles trend and then date while the classics just evolve.

People are paying far more attention than ever before to architecture and the influences it has upon their own personal experience. This evolution within the family home is driving industries while being fuelled by all forms of media as the appetite to create that feeling compounds. The long-term success of the Hamptons style is beach meets farmhouse look that feels very “relaxed” and that is an experience which contours perfectly to our Australian culture of being outdoors, to enjoy a BBQ, play cricket, or lounge by the pool. Homes in the Hamptons are typically found near the beach, which is another reason why we’ve adopted this style so easily. It just works so well.

The “Hamptons” refers collectively to a string of coastal communities in the state of New York, stretching up the eastern tip of Long Island, including Montauk, Southampton and Sag Harbor. Back during the 1870s, a train line first opened up the village of Southampton to the city of New York and today it remains the economic centre of the area. Easy access, beautiful beaches and fresh air made this seaside enclave irresistible to world-weary New Yorkers. Synonymous with sophistication, style and glamorous beachside private estates attracting owners like Beyoncé, Jay Z, Alec Baldwin, Steven Spielberg and Jerry Seinfeld.

The versatility of the Hamptons style is that it’s layered. If you want to include sophistication, add drama with lighting or if a more masculine space is required you have monochrome and greys over the blues and whites. The floor plans are typically spacious filled with natural light, open living areas connecting to porches and terraces where entertaining and outdoor cooking is a must.

So whether it’s Hamptons or not, I recommend picking a classic style of architecture for long term gains in Real Estate. As buyers will understand your home more and they can always pick up where you left off.
